The difference between silicone-based and water-based lubricants

Het verschil tussen glijmiddel op siliconen of waterbasis
Inhoudsopgave

Water-based lubricant is soluble in water, feels natural, and rinses off easily. Silicone-based lubricant stays smooth longer, is water-repellent, and doesn’t dry out quickly. The main difference lies in the composition: water-based contains water as the main ingredient, while silicone-based contains silicone oils.

Which option is best for which situation?

    • Water-based lubricant: ideal for daily use, especially during penetration or with silicone sex toys. It dries out a bit faster, but you can easily add some water or extra lubricant to make it smooth again. Perfect for short to medium sessions and compatible with latex condoms.

    • Silicone-based lubricant: suitable for long-lasting sex, anal sex, or use in water (shower, bath, pool). It stays smooth on average 3 to 5 times longer than water-based and feels silky soft. Not washable with water alone but easy to remove with soap. Ideal for situations where long-lasting lubrication is desired without reapplying.

The effect of lubricant on toys and condoms

Toys: always use water-based lubricant with silicone toys. Silicone-based can damage the surface of silicone toys, making them sticky and prone to bacteria buildup. Toys made of glass, metal, ABS plastic, or stainless steel are safe with silicone-based lubricant.

Condoms: both water-based and silicone-based lubricants are safe with latex and polyurethane condoms. Avoid oil-based lubricants as they damage latex and increase the risk of tearing.

What can go wrong when choosing lubricant?

When choosing lubricant, you might pick the wrong one because it can be harmful to your skin, your sex toy, or not provide the desired effects.

If you choose a lubricant made mostly of artificial ingredients, your skin might react badly, and your sex toy could get damaged if ingredients start to degrade the material.

So make sure your lubricant is hypoallergenic and water-based to minimize damage to your sex toy or body. Preferably, choose a water-based lubricant made mostly from natural ingredients.

Which natural lubricants can you use?

Natural lubricants like saliva or aloe vera are possible but often hard to dose. The easiest option is to choose a natural, water-based lubricant since it’s simpler to use. Our lubricant comes in an economical large package, providing as many as 50-100 doses.

What should you pay attention to when buying lubricant?

When buying lubricant, you should consider a few things and ask yourself:

    • Am I allergic to any ingredients or are there unnatural liquids included?
    • Is this lubricant suitable for my sex toy or harmful to the material?
    • Do I want my lubricant to provide extra stimulation, tingling, numbing, or just lubrication?
    • What ingredients are in this lubricant? (Aim for as many natural ingredients as possible)
    • Is it oil-based or water-based lubricant? (Water-based is best and safest)
    • How large is the lubricant packaging?
    • What is the price per dose?
    • How quickly does the lubricant dry out during use?

Many of the above questions are specific to your own situation, so it’s important to carefully consider what matters most to you. You can always test lubricants to find out which works best for you. Not all lubricants are the same, and it’s worth seeing which one gives you the most pleasure.
